Package Units are as the name suggest, the full package. They heat and cool and come in a nice box! Typically package units for air conditioning start from 10 kW but can range up to 200 kw.
The majority of Package Units installed would be in the range from 30 kW up to 100 kW. It is extremely common for buildings to have a number of units to achieve their cooling requirements using package systems.
Packaged Unit systems generally have a larger footprint than a split system so they are most often mounted on the roof of a building. Such a location allows package units to mix and pump fresh air directly from the unit into the duct system within the building. So duct systems are an integral part of any package units. Being located on a roof means you should consider roof access and safety requirements for servicing.
The locations that you will find Package Units is typically in commercial, industrial and warehousing locations across metropolitan areas. They are very easy to install as during construction the units are hoisted by crane onto the roof where commissioning can then take place.
Package Units have compressors requiring oil and refrigerant gases. The heat exchange takes place through a condenser coil. This means the units do need to be serviced regularly and ideally the coils cleaned at least annually to ensure the most efficient heat transfer possible, which will lower your power costs.
